OCPS is Banning E-bikes and Electric Scooters for Younger Students

Orange County Public Schools is pumping the brakes on students bringing electric bikes, scooters, and other motorized devices to school. The Orange County School Board approved a new micromobility policy on July 28 that prohibits elementary and middle school students from bringing or operating motorized transportation devices on school property. The rules will apply to e-bikes, electric scooters, hoverboards, one-wheel devices, and other electrically powered contraptions your child may insist are completely safe. Regular bicycles, skateboards, non-motorized scooters, and other human-powered devices will still be allowed, subject to the rules of each individual school. High school students will be allowed to bring certain motorized devices to campus, but only if they have a valid driver’s license or learner’s permit and obtain a school-issued decal. Once they reach school property, students must get off and walk their devices before securing them at a designated bicycle rack
