
Florida deputy killed in crash while responding to deputy-involved shooting: Officials

A 79-year-old man died Oct. 10 evening after being shot by Brevard County sheriff’s deputies during a well-being check at a home on Pine Avenue in Mims.Two deputies responded to the address at approximately 7:55 p.m. after the man’s son called authorities to report that his father was suicidal, according to the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office. Upon arrival, the deputies determined the man met the criteria for an involuntary mental health evaluation under Florida’s Baker Act and called for medical transportation.When medical personnel arrived, sheriff’s office officials said the man pulled out a gun that was hidden beneath his body and pointed it toward the deputies. Both deputies fired their weapons, and the man was taken to a local medical facility, where he died.Authorities have not released the names of the man or the deputies involved in the incident.
